What's RSI?
A short definition and some hints on detection.
RSI stands for Repetitive Strain Injury. It is typically used to describe a range of pain and damage incurred by excessive repetitive movement at work, though other activities can cause damage. Other terms used to describe are Diffuse Upper Limb Pain and Work Related Upper Limb Disorders (WRULDs) .
It is common knowledge that repetitive movements give rise to RSIs. It is less commonly acknowledged that it is very often the repetition combined with incorrect posture that causes the problem.
Knowledge of correct posture will go a long way to preventing injury.
Knowledge of the symptoms - especially tingling, pins and needles or numbness in the arm, wrist or fingers which disappears during rest - will help in picking up early that there is a problem. This is vital, for the longer a condition is allowed to progress, the greater the amount of time it takes to get back to normal if ever.
Knowledge of the circumstances in which symptoms might arise can also help prevention and early detection.
