What can I do about RSI?
The first measure in countering RSI is prevention.
Carry out workstation risk assessments to ensure the best possible working environment – equipment, layout, lighting, work timetable. All this is legally required – Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 as amended by the Health and Safety (Miscelleaneous Amendments) Regulations 2002.
Obtain training, especially in posture. To be fully effective, this must be customised – that is, the training is tailored to the person at the workstation. Human bodies are not generic!
Avoid the conditions that lead to bad posture and severe repetition – particularly temporary workstations and other conditions that put pressure on the worker such as deadlines and large volumes of work.
Be absolutely sure that workers feel free to raise a problem when they feel pain. Catch a problem early, and less time will be lost than if a condition takes hold.
