An RSI case avoided

A true story of how a potentially nasty RSI case was avoided.

An employee was given a huge data-entering task prior to some complex computer modelling. The job was estimated to take 10 working days.

Within two days of starting, she was starting to get marked pain in the fingers operating her mouse.

She told a ETCOM physiotherapist who was doing some other training in her office about this pain. The physio got clearance from management to investigate, and was able to do two things. First, she reminded the employee of the principals she had learned in a previous training session. Secondly, she recommended a small piece of equipment to change the hand position at the mouse.

Within two days the pain had gone, and has not re-occurred.

The consequences, had nothing been done, would have been that the employee, who has a determined nature, would have completed the task in spite of her pain, but then would almost certainly have had a condition that would not have been so easily dealt with. She would have been off work. Salary and National Insurance wasted, overheads and work to be carried by colleagues, lost profit.

Lessons confirmed:
1. Preventative training helps, even if only to reinforce the necessity of calling for help.
2. Nipping an RSI condition in the bud avoids development of expensive conditions.
