Ergonomics and postural training
Why one needs postural training as well as all that lovely ergonomic kit.
Perhaps we should have explained this before.
The definition of ergonomics from the Ergonomics Society is “the application of scientific information concerning humans to the design of objects, systems and environment for human use.”
Perhaps the most important word in the definition is “design”. Ergonomics happens before you get involved.
Ergonomically well designed equipment will help the body carry out a certain action. A good ergonomic chair, for instance, may hold the body in a position in which the movement muscles do not have to work to hold the body up. Postural muscles do this more easily, and the chair will therefore help them do it for longer. But they will still get tired, and then you slump. With bad ergonomic chair, you will probably have to use movement muscles to hold yourself up, and will consequently slump more quickly; actually, very quickly.
One of the aims of postural training is to help you understand this, and know when and how to move and to use equipment so that you do not fall into slump-mode.
